Abstract

The book is a philosophical discussion of existence, beings, and the characteristics of the Virtuous City. It has an introduction and 37 chapters. In the introduction, the translator discusses Alfarabius's life, works, and philoso-phical thought, and makes brief allusions to Alfarabius's views on the relationship between man and the universe, practical philosophy from Plato, Aristotle, and Alfarabius's points of view, and matters relating to ethics. The text of the book, first discusses such matters as the prime being, positive and negative attributes, mode of the emanation of being from the prime being, states of beings, attributes worthy of divine essence, emanation of multiplicity from unity, revelation and angels, and finally, the differences and commonalities among beings.

Beginning with Ch. 26, or in effect the book's second part, Alfrabius embarks on a depiction of the virtuous society and a comparison between the states and affairs of the world with parts of human body. Thus, he attempts to elaborate on the fundamentals of social politics, which is a part of practical philosophy. At the end, the author also alludes to such matters as prosperity, villainy, justice, and the ideas of Virtuous City.

The volumes cover all the old and new rational sciences and thus, exclude subjects relating to the empirical and naql? (traditional) sciences.
Volumes 1 and 2 (From ƒ-Y?') include informa-tion on the sources, and volume 3 is an index of documents, proper names, titles, and subjects.

Abstract

The book's contents are presented in the form of an imaginary conversation, involving a few Muslims and a Sufi, in which mysticism, Sufism, philosophy, and their practitioners are condemned. The author provides the following description of his book: It exposes Sufis' untold secrets and corrupt opinions, and lays bare the fact that the sayings of the claimers of vision and intuition and the philosophers leads to the same conclusion, and that they have adopted their opinions from the people who lived before Jesus and have no relations to any shar?`as and falsely ascribe themselves to shar?a`, while all the divine laws and sciences are in contradiction to their ways, and the Quran, the Ead?ths (tradition), the prayers, and reason and human nature attest to their falsehood.

Abstract

The book is mainly devoted to the opinions of Western philosophers regarding the subjects of understanding philosophy and epistemology, although Ch. 3, on general principles or ontology, is more akin to the style of Islamic philosophy. The book's special characteristic is its omission of the discussions on the necessary existent. In the author's opinion, the proof for the necessary existent belongs to the books on theology. The book's 3 parts include, understanding philosophy, epistemology, and ontology. Part 1 discusses the relation between various schools of philosophy and the rise of transcendental theosophy. Part 2, is devoted to epistemology and its roots and obstacles. Part 3, is about the general principles of philosophy.
