Abstract

Justice is a fundamental concept in Islamic thought. Based on their era, intellectuals have proposed various definitions and analyses of justice throughout history.

The book tries to find common and also divergent viewpoints of three great Islamic intellectuals on this concept; i.e. Muïahhar?, Shar?`at? and Sayyid Quïb. Ch. 1 entitled, The Historical Development of the Concept of Justice in Political Thought deals with justice in Islam, justice in Christianity and justice in Shiite and Sunnite viewpoints. Ch. 2 is devoted to historical and social backgrounds of the three personalities' thoughts in Iran and Egypt as well as their common and divergent viewpoints. In Chs. 3 to 5, the opinions of each of them are explained based on their writings and the remarks by other researchers. As a result, the following differences are observed in their views: Muïahhar? has a philosophical approach in defining justice and regards it as observance and protection of rights of the people; Shar?`at? has a sociological outlook on class equality; and Sayyid Quïb has a religious approach based on Ash`arite kal?m (theology), regarding justice as implemention of religious laws. On the other hand, all the three conceptions are common in their reliance on religion and the Glorious Quran. Finally, the author believes Muïahhar?'s definition of justice is the same as Aristotle and Mull? ?adr?'s, and regards Muïahhar?'s definition more concrete than those of Shar?`at? and Sayyid Quïb.
