by M?r-ƒkhur?, Q?sim, Edition 1, Tehran, Y?d?war?n, pp. 247, Farsi. pbk, 19x13 cm, 3300 Copies, Rls.13500. ISBN: 964-91409-6-4 Dewey: 297/8924 ID: S15626 Persian Title: Chah?r Matn az Zindig?-yi Œall?j Abstract This
collection includes a long article on combined narratives of the life of Œall?j and four texts on the life of Œall?j on Maqtal
al-Œall?j, The History of the Sufis, Bid?yat Œ?l
al-Œ?ll?j wa Nah?yatih? and Akhb?r
al-Œall?j. The opening article, written by
L. Massignon, includes various reports of historians
on Œall?j (Œusayan b. Manê?r)'s life, from childhood to adolescence and
finally his martyrdom. Text I is written by the son of the secretary of Œall?j's court of justice, Ism?`?l
b. Ab? `Abd-All?h
MuEammad b. Zanj?,
known as Ibn Zanj?. Massignon wrote this text on the basis of books of Ibn `Abd?s Jahshiy?r?, Ibn San?n, Ab? `Al? Miskiwayh, Hamad?n?, Ibn Ath?r, Ibn Khallik?n and Katb?.
Text II is written by `Abd al-RaEm?n
Sullam? and text I includes
parts of T?r?kh al-??fiyyah
(the history of the Sufis) derived from the history of Baghd?d
by Khaï?b al-Baghd?d?.
Text IV is written by Ibn Bak?
al-Sh?r?z?, one of Sufis of 4th
and early 5th centuries A.H. All of these texts concern with the life of Œall?j. D?nish-Pazh?h, Man?chihr (1317- ) 153. A Dictionary of Mystical Terms, Edition 1, pbk, 19x13 cm, 2200 Copies, Rls.10000, loc. P?rs?. ISBN: 964-321-019-7 Dewey: 297/803 ID: B16976 Persian Title: Farhang-i Iêïil?E?t-i `Irf?n? Abstract The book
is intended as a concise glossary for assisting the interested youth in their
under-standing of mystical texts and poems, and is based on old and new
mystical and Sufi lexicons. Among its characteristics are: mere inclusion of
mystical connotations of a word, election of the clearest meanings, avoidance
of citing examples from mystical prose and poetry, quotation from sources
without citing the individuals' names, and inclusion of the list of sources at
the end of the book. The book also contains a treatise entitled, An?s al-`Ushsh?q,
by Sharaf al-D?n
R?m?, which is a description of human
anatomy according to poets. The quasi-dictionary treatise has separate sections
for each organ, which contains its various Arabic and Farsi names, poetic
analogies and their tertium comparationis,
and samples of relevant poems. Dhik?wat?-Qar?guzl?, `Al?-Ri»? (1322- ) 154. `Irf?niyy?t:
A Collection of Mystical Articles, Edition 1, pbk, 24x17 cm, 2000 Copies, Rls.20000, loc. P?rs?. ISBN: 964-7040-03-2 Dewey: 297/82 ID: S16357 Persian Title: `Irf?niyy?t: Majm?`ih Maq?l?t-i `Irf?n?
As is
evident from the collection's title, all of its articles are somehow related to
Islamic mysticism. The author's method in his elaborations on or
criticisms of Sufism, is scientific and criticohis-torical. His position, unlike that of superficialists; is neither one of opposition or absolute
rejection of mysticism, nor is it the enamored capitulation of its devotees.
The articles are mainly about various mystics or the elaboration of their
thoughts and opinions. The titles of some of the most important articles are as
follows: `Iyn al-Qu»?t
and his critics, a look at the life and thought of Kh?jah
Y?suf Hamid?n?,
from R?zbih?n to Œ?fi§, the life and thought of Ibn Sab`?n,
Sufism in the works of Ibn Taym?ya, A journey through the works of M?r Sayyid `Al? Œamid?n?,
The commentaries of the school of Shaykh ?af? al-D?n
Ardab?l? on mystical poems. Œall?j, Œusayn

consists of six parts, each of which has hitherto been corrected and published
in various other collections, but are presented here in translation along with
brief commentaries. The book’s sections are as follows: 1) The book of £aw?s?n and Bust?n
al-Ma`rifah, 2) The book of Œad?ths

anecdotes on Œall?j’s mystical
experiences, 5) Poems (112 pieces attributed to Œall?j),
6) Kalim?t al-Œall?j
(a collection of concepts and phrases used by Œall?j
in his poetry and-prose).Of course, it should
be noted at the time of Œall?j's imprisonment,
trial, and execution, his works were all destroyed and what remains is the
result of gleanings from various other books and collections. `Im?d?-Sh?r?z?,

is a discussion of the legitimacy of Sufism and its beliefs and practices.
It is, in effect, a critique of the book entitled, Disclosure Of The Secret. The author dismisses the views of the
aforementioned book and its defense of Sufism. He presents historical documents
pertaining to the contradictions of Gun?b?d?
Sufis in words and deeds, and questions their violent activities in forcing
their opponents from the scene. He also discusses the following topics: history
of the rise of Sufism in Islam, views of the Infallible Imams (`a) and Sh?`a scholars regarding Sufism, analysis of
fabricated hadiths in support of Sufism, roots of
paying `ushr?yyah (tithe) in Sufism, and Sh?`a authorities' fatw?s
(legal opinions) on the unlaw-fulness-of-paying-`ushr?yyah. Lewisohn Leonard 157. Beyond Belief and Disbelief: Sheiykh MaEm?d Shabistar?, Translated by Kiyw?n?,

author believes that the concept of monastery Sufism can be different
from the pure Islamic `irf?n (mysticism).
Thus, by rejecting the Sufi orders who connect their self-made spiritual chains
to Imam `Al?, he attempts at a thorough
documentation of the ij?zas of the mash?yikh (licenses of the Sufi masters). He then,
embarks on an evaluation of the validity of the attribution of these ij?zas, which are presented in various forms. The
author believes that Imam `Al? (`a) is the
first in the chain of Sufi masters, and the masters' ij?zas
were transmitted through Kumayl b. Ziy?d to the ?aE?bah
(the Prophet Muhammad's companions) and the rest of the Sufi masters. The book
contains detailed discussions on the Ch?shtiyyah,
Q?diriyy-ah, R?zbah?niyyah,
Kubraw?yah, Dhahabiyyah,
and-N?rbakhshiyyah-Sufi-orders. |
