Persian Title: Kh?niq?h: Mathnaw?-yi `Irf?n? wa Akhl?q? bih Piyraw? az B?st?n-i Sa`d?

Abstract

The book is a collection of mystico-ethical poems in the style of the B?st?n of Shaykh Muêlih al-D?n Sa`d? of Sh?r?z. F?q?r Sh?r?z? is among the poets of the past century (d. 1930), who belongs to the period of literary restoration and thus has imitated and reconstructed all of Sa`d?'s works. Besides the present mathnaw? (couplets), his Khar?b?t is also written in the style of the Gulist?n of Sa`d?. The editor believes it is the author's most important work.
Kh?niq?h (Sufi Monasrey) has four sections entitled: 1) Seclusion, 2) Silence, 3) Hunger, 4) Vigilance. Each section consists of ten stations. These mystical and ethical stations are usually elaborated by citing examples and stories. There are notes and explanations by the editor, at the end of each section. His nine-part index at the end of the book will also prove useful to the readers.

Abstract

Shams al-Din Muhammad Œ?fi?-Sh?r?z? (1347-1412), one of the greatest Iranian sonnetists and one of the most prominent poets throughout the history of Iran.
His poems that consist of mainly lyrics and incidentally couplets and quatrains are on the topmost of Iranian musical literature and consequently, subject to constant examination, Œ?fi?'s existing collection of poems is arranged in alphabetical order of terminal sounds of rhymes in lyrics, and so far no one has managed to give to a topical or chronological order (e.g. compositions related to Œ?fi?'s different periods of life).
Love and intoxication are central themes of these lyrics which, according to some experts, all refer, metaphorically to divine devotion and spiritual wine and as some other believe, are mostly symbols of profane love and liquor. Researchers believe that love and intoxication in Œ?fi?'s poetry, could have been of earthly or divine and physical or spiritual implication. Moreover, instances of literary or neutral love are also found in Œ?fi?'s poems.

Abstract

The book is a commentary (from 17th century) on poems attributed to Imam `Al? (`a). The editors, in their introduction, discuss the author, his works, and the method of the Divan's compilation. The book consists of two separate parts. Part 1 entitled, The Seven Openings, contains the following topics: the straight path, divine attributes, Macro Anthropo (Celestials) and Micro Anthropo, prophethood and wil?yah, Imam `Al?'s virtues according to the Quran and hadiths (traditions). In discussing the above topics, the author cites the opinions of both the theologians and Sufis. In other words, he reconciles between rational and naql? (traditional) reasons, although he deems intellect by itself to be insufficient for arriving at the truth.
Part 2 is the commentary on the couplets. First, there is a discussion on the meaning of each couplet's words and relevant grammatical points. It is followed by the couplet's Farsi translation and an appropriate quatrain.
On occasion, the author presents anecdotes relating to some of the poems.
