Abstract

The book is an ethical and mystical selection from the K?my?-yi Sa`?dat (Elixir of Happiness), which is considered one of the works belonging to the Islamic heritage of the 11th century, with Sunni and Sufi leanings. First, there is an account of the life and thoughts of Ab? Œam?d Muhammad Ghazz?l?. Then, the text of his work, which contains various Quranic verses, hadiths (traditions), and anecdotes, is presented in two separate parts entitled, The Title of Being a Muslim and The Fundamentals of Muslim-hood. The most important topics include: knowing one’s own self, truth of the heart, the nature of prophethood and wil?yah, knowing the Truth, knowledge of the world, knowledge of the hereafter, the nature of death, meaning of the Resurrection and the tomb’s suffering, pursuit of the world, virtues of prayer, zak?t and alms, fasting and hajj, rituals of eating, marriage, trade and travel, enjoining the good and forbidding the evil, self-mortification, moral vices and virtues, things that lead to the soul’s deliverance, the nature of ri»? (contentment), remembrance of death, muE?sabah (self-examination) after the deeds, fear and hope, poverty and austerity, love and yearning, states of the dead.
